“Norma”, the masterpiece composed by Vincenzo Bellini, is considered “the perfect opera”. The title character is a Galician high priestess living at the time of the Roman invasion. The work tells a story of an inner conflict between her love towards a member of the enemy army and the sense of obligation towards her own community, where fight between feelings and duty gains a universal dimension. The part of Norma is regarded as one of the most difficult opera soprano parts, and the performers frequently call it “a murderer of sopranos”.
